Install on icon bar

On: BookMaker will create an icon on the iconbar. Clicking this
icon will display the main window. BookMaker will only quit when the "Quit" menu
item is selected.

Off: There will be no iconbar icon, and the main window will be displayed
immediately. Whether BookMaker quits when this window is closed is controlled by the
"Quit on close" preference below.

Changing this preference will have no effect while BookMaker is running.

Quit on close

On: Closing the window will quit BookMaker - if there are any
outstanding changes, these are either automatically saved, or you will
be offered the chance to save them.

Off: Closing the window will not quit BookMaker, and the window
can be re-opened by re-running BookMaker (this will not run
another copy of BookMaker). The only way to quit BookMaker is to select the
"Quit" option from one of the menus.

This preference is only relevant if the "Install on icon bar" preference is
off.

Auto-save on quit

Ticking this option will cause BookMaker to save any outstanding changes automatically when
the program quits - there is no way to discard any changes made by mistake.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Auto-open new books

If this option is selected, whenever a new book is created it will be opened immediately.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Show address in toolbar

Selecting this option will tell BookMaker to provide a continually updating display of the
title or address under the mouse pointer in the toolbar. If "Names" are displayed
in the main window, the toolbar will show the address; and vice-versa. Holding down
the <CTRL> key will freeze the display until the key is released.

Changing this preference will take effect immediately.

Toolbar

This control will allow you to specify whether you wish to use a large toolbar, a small toolbar,
or no toolbar at all.

Hotlist Only

Selecting this option will prevent BookMaker from opening any of the address books other
than the browser hotlist(s). If this is enabled, BookMaker will normally start up with
the main hotlist open.

Changing this preference will have no effect while BookMaker is running.

Open Hotlist

Selecting this option will force BookMaker to start with the main browser hotlist open.
This option is faded if the "Hotlist Only" option is set.

Changing this preference will have no effect while BookMaker is running.

Add URLs to main book

This option controls the location for URLs added when the client browser's "Add to hotlist" button is clicked.

If selected, URLs will be added ad the end of the main browser hotlist.

If deselected, the "Add to hotlist" button will bring up a hierarchical menu of hotlist folders. The URL will be added at the end of whichever folder is selected.

Changing this preference will take effect immediately.

Adjust Double-Click

This preference allows you to control the action BookMaker will take on an double-click
on an address with the mouse Adjust button, and when a double-click with the Select button
is made when the <CTRL> key is held down.

The result of preference settings are shown in the table below

Save dragged links as...

If the shift key is held down when a hotlist address is dragged, BookMaker will allow the URL
to be dragged to a filer window. The format in which the URL is saved can be in one of two formats - ANT URL (File type &f91) or Acorn URI (File type &b28). This preference specifies which
of the two file formats is used.

In either case, the name of the file will be URL<n>, where <n> is a number that starts at 1 and is incremented every time a file is saved by dragging.

If multiple addresses (or a folder) are selected, it is still possible to shift-drag the selection, but in this case all addresses will end up in an HTML files called Hotlist<n&gt.

Changing this preference will take effect immediately.

Line spacing

This preference allows you to specify the spacing of the lines in the main window, as a
percentage of the notional font size. It can be adjusted from 100% (the default)
to 120%.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Colours

This group consists of of four colour menus and two option buttons, and allows you to set
the colours used by the BookMaker list window:

Background colour. If the background colour is set to 1 (one), the "Marbled"
option button below the colour menu can be used to select between a marbled and solid
colour background.

Foreground colour

Distribution list - the foreground colour used by distribution list
entries in the Email book

As Address Book - the Email book(s) will use the foreground colours as set up
by the Messenger Pro or !Posty email client. Ticking this option will disable the
"Distribution list" colour menu. The Email colours can be set with
the Colour item from the Address menu.

Bad URL - On startup, BookMaker scans all the addresses in all the books checking
for legality. Any addresses that BookMaker thinks are invalid will be be shown in this
colour.

Font details

This group of preferences can be used to define the font face and size used in the main BookMaker
window.

If the "Font" option button is unselected, BookMaker will use the default font
(for RISCOS 3.5 and later, this is the desktop font; for earlier versions of the OS, it is the System
Font).

If the "Font" option button is selected, the font face and size controls will be unfaded,
and you may specify any font face available on your computer, and any font size between 8 and 24 point.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Auto-resize

This menu is used to select when BookMaker will resize the window. This can be set to one of:

Never: The window will only ever be shrunk to avoid whitespace at the bottom.

Full size: When a book is opened, the window will grow as necessary to display the
contents, but only if it had been toggled to full size before the book was opened.

Always: The window will grow whenever a book is opened.

Select Browser

BookMaker provides support for a range of browsers - select your preferred browser
from the pull-down menu.

BookMaker also allows the some browsers (Browse, Fresco, Oregano1 and NetSurf) to share their (HTML-based) hotlists. To share these hotlists, it is necessary to update the browser config file (or in the base of Oregano1, the !Run file). For simplicity, the location of the Browse hotlist is taken as the reference location.

To update the Fresco configuration:

Locate the Fresco configuration file - this is the file Config located inside !Fresco.

Load the file into your favourite text editor, and find the line

files.hots: <something-or-other>

Replace this line by

files.hots: <Choices$Write>.WWW.Browse.Hotlist

Save the file

To update the NetSurf configuration:

Locate the NetSurf choices file (Choices:WWW.NetSurf.Choices)

Load the file into your favourite text editor, and find the line

hotlist_path: <something-or-other>

Replace this line by

hotlist_path: <Choices$Write>:WWW.Browse.Hotlist

Find the line

hotlist_save: <something-or-other>

Replace this line by

hotlist_save: <Choices$Write>:WWW.Browse.Hotlist

Save the file

To modify Oregano1 to share the hotlist:

Load the file !Oregano.!Run into your favourite text editor, and find the line

Set Oregano$Bookmarks OreganoChoices:Bookmarks

To share the hotlist between Oregano and Browse, change this line to:

Set Oregano$Bookmarks <Choices$Write>.WWW.Browse.Hotlist

To share the hotlist between Oregano and Fresco, change the
"OreganoChoices:Bookmarks" to the location of the Fresco hotlist
(this is given in the file !Fresco.Config in the line beginning "files.hots").

Save the !Oregano.!Run file.

Although this mechanism will allow Oregano to share a hotlist with Browse or Fresco,
the !Run file is typically overwritten during an upgrade and the modification will hence
be lost. It will therefore be necessary to re-apply the edit after each upgrade.

To share the hotlist between all three browsers, apply both procedures - i.e. edit the !Fresco.Config file and the !Oregano.!Run file.

After changing from Fresco or Oregano to the "Shared" option,
it is essential that you start BookMaker and save the hotlist before
loading Browse. Failure to do so may result in the folder names being
corrupted.

Show Hotlist

If the configured browser is Fresco or Browse, BookMaker can be automatically invoked when the
"Show Hotlist" button in the browser's toolbar is clicked - this is courtesy of Christina
West's HotClickX module. This control allows you to specify which mouse buttons will invoke
BookMaker in this way.

Oregano is designed to work with BookMaker, so this option is not relevant.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Warn of unsafe saves

The integration of BookMaker with certain browsers is less than ideal - any
hotlist changes saved by BookMaker can be overwritten by the browser when it
exits. These problems can be avoided if the browser is quit before saving from
BookMaker

Selecting this option will result in a reminder warning being displayed
when an attempt to save changes is made that may cause problems.

only those addresses in the Public address book are visible (i.e. BookMaker will not
display user-specific address books).

Needs OLE Support

If the configured Telnet client is FreeTerm, BookMaker provides an easy
way to load script files into a text editor without having to search inside
!FreeTerm; however, this requires the use of a text editor that supports
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). Both Zap and StrongEd are OLE-aware, but
the standard !Edit is not. However, !Edit can be made to function as if it
supported OLE if the OLESupport module is running. Selecting this option will
make BookMaker load the OLESupport module when BookMaker is booted, if the
module is available in the system's modules directory.

BookMaker request confirmation that you wish to discard these changes.

Changes to this preference will take effect immediately.

Hotkeys

This group allows you to alter the keyboard accelerators (aka "hotkeys") used by BookMaker.
The functions that can be invoked via keyboard accelerators are:

Function

Default key

Help

F1

Preferences Help

^F1

F6

Backspace

Find

F4

Find again

^F4

Quit

^Q

To change the key used to invoke a function, enter the new key name into the appropriate field.
Most key names will be correctly recognized (e.g. TAB, BACK or BS for Backspace, ENTER, etc).

The"hat" character (^) indicates the use of the control key (i.e. ^Q is Ctrl-Q,
^F1 is Ctrl-F1), while Shift is indicated by the character generated by Alt-139 (this may be
displayed oddly, as it is outside the normal ASCII range).

When the preferences window is closed, you may see the error "One or more hotkeys ignored".
This means that the key name(s) specified for one or more of the hot keys was not recognised. Should
this occur, the key names mapped to those particular functions will be unchanged from their previous
settings.
